Project Happy Apples (PHA)
Our role as future doctors is ‘to cure sometimes, to relieve often, to comfort always’. We may not be ready to cure, but right now, we can provide comfort for a group of people who really need it: those who have been diagnosed with life-limiting diseases.
And why not learn something while you’re at it! Death is part and parcel of the job of a doctor and unfortunately, medical school currently only gives us a 4 day glimpse into palliative care during our clinical years. Project Happy Apples will be a great opportunity to gain exposure and some clinical knowledge with regards to palliative care.
SO, if you want to start making a difference, join the Project Happy Apples family in our journey to bring joy and care to our patients while learning more about palliative care!
This year, we have refined our aims, goals and action plan and hope to serve each and every patient to the fullest. We will befriend and accompany our patients throughout their life journey, engage in activities that the patients truly enjoy, and attempt to help them complete any wishes they might have.
We also plan to enrich the learning of our volunteers with soft skills and clinical knowledge of palliative care. So join us in serving our palliative patients, which will take place once every two weeks in groups of 4!
An hour of interactions with patients might be the only activity they look forward to for the day.
And that’s not all! We want to further our vision by making a sustainable impact beyond the medical community. Working closely with the Before-I- Die team, we hope to get people talking about the taboo topics of death and facilitate discussions on end-of-life topics with the public. We will also share with the public about palliative care and clear any misconceptions about end-of- life care.
Our vision is to Develop societal preparedness for end-of-life care and death in Singapore So, this year, we hope that through these volunteer sessions, we are able to produce a life-story exhibition at the end which showcases the turmoil, struggles and heartening stories of our newfound palliative friends in a publicity event to help us reach out to the public and facilitate discussion on end-of- life issues.
