🌱 Welcome to the Medical Humanities Collective (medhums)!
Starting med school comes with a flood of firsts—terms you’ve never heard, facts you can’t quite grasp, and concepts that won’t land. But in the quiet moments between the rush, you might start to wonder: Is there more to medicine than memorising and managing illness? What kind of doctor do I want to become? What does it mean to care, really?
That’s where we come in.
🤩 The medical humanities collective is a student–doctor interest group run independently of the NUS Medical Society. We span medical schools, hospitals, and healthcare clusters across Singapore. Our members include current M1 to M5 students and alumni, and together, we hold space for conversations that don’t always happen in the wards or lecture halls.
We explore the human dimension of medicine that’s often sidelined —what it means to make sense of suffering 💭, to understand care 🤝, and to see medicine not just as a science, but as a deeply social and relational endeavour 🌍
Our initiatives include:
🗣 MedTalks – student-led, topical discussion/seminar-based sessions on social science themes like narrative medicine and vulnerability in med school. Read more about our unique pedagogy here: https://medicine.nus.edu.sg/taps/issues/a-safe-space-to-engage-medtalks-a-student-led-discussion-group-on-the-medical-humanities/
📖 MedLit – poetry, literature, and book club discussions as springboards for exploring illness, identity, and the human condition
🧠 MedPhilo – philosophical deep dives into e.g. diagnosis, ethics, and what it means to know in medicine
💬 Spotlight - our education and publicity arm that aims to broaden our reach outside of our sessions
We also partner with the SingHealth Duke-NUS Medical Humanities Institute, Singhealth Medicine ACP Office of Medical Humanities, and NHG HUME (Humanistic Medicine), and collaborate closely with NUS/NUHS faculty on Medhums projects and curriculum initiatives.
These sessions are open to all—no background needed, just curiosity and heart.💡❤️
