Publications Directorate

The publications directorate is a community of writers and content creators who bring greater diversity and vibrancy to the medical school experience by producing engaging and meaningful publications. Through the telling of narratives and anecdotes, we hope to present the different aspects of medical school in an honest, personable and insightful manner. The practice of medicine, at its core, is about shared experiences. As part of the medical humanities, it is hoped that writing and reading will help us to become better doctors – who are more thoughtful, reflective, and empathetic to our patients and the people around us.

Publications creates a repository of medical school memories through the collation, documentation and archival of individual and collective stories. These serves as common ground for our identity and experience as YLL students, and are precious material that we, as well as batches to come, can read, learn, and take heart from. As a directorate, Publications functions as both a bridge - connecting aspiring writers to the resources they need to improve their craft, as well as a stage - providing common platforms, both digital and printed, where creative works can be recognised and appreciated.

By joining us, members can look forward to a fun year of improving their writing skills, experiencing the editorial process, and seeing words take off the page.

Initiatives

Humans of YLL (in collaboration with PR Directorate)

Humans of YLL takes after the famed Humans of NY project, and serves to share the stories of different personalities of the school with the student population in a byte-sized, easy to read, and accessible manner.

(These include interviews with students across the different batches, professors, past alumni, as well as the less well-known figures we may not frequently notice but nevertheless contribute to our medical school experience - the medlib cleaner, the Anatomy Hall lab technician, admin staff from DO - written into captions with paired photographs. They will be posted at monthly intervals on our IG page @HumansofYLL.)

Humans of YLL provides an upfront snapshot of people and life as it happens. These are stories we can all read, relate to, and take heart from.

Artspeaks@Med

Artspeaks@Med is a publication showcasing the artistic talents of medical students. It is an annual collection of the best of the visual art, creative writing, and commentary by medical students. It aims to provide a platform for creative expression, encourage the sharing of ideas and voicing of opinions, and bring greater vibrancy to medical school through artistic appreciation.

Writing Workshops and Talks

A series of workshops and talks by local writers and practicing doctors, who will share about a variety of topics, from the technicalities of writing and what makes for good writing, their own creative process and journeys, to how writing relates to the practice of medicine and the medical humanities. We will have a line-up of talks on poetry, prose, and commentary/reflective pieces.

Through our workshops and talks, we hope to promote greater exposure to and interest in the literary arts, provide an avenue for budding writers to improve their craft of writing, and encourage appreciation of how writing relates to Medicine.
